Behind the Scenes with the Small Business Revolution

Nadav Neuhaus photographs Carpe Diem employeesCarpe Diem is honored to be one of 100 small businesses around the country to receive recognition from the Small Business Revolution. Earlier this summer, we spent the day alongside professional photographer, Nadav Neuhaus, who documented a day in the life at Carpe Diem to best tell our story. Stay tuned for a photo series spotlighting our work; we guarantee it’s worth the wait! In the meantime, we wanted to take you behind the scenes the day of our photoshoot.

Carpe Diem CEO and founder Wendy Clark worked with Small Business Revolution staff to plan a visit that would best highlight how our cleaning business impacts our community. From a visit to Carpe Diem’s headquarters in the formerly blighted Farmer’s Exchange building, to following along on a scheduled cleaning visit, Wendy and Nadav worked all day to capture photos that best exhibit Carpe Diem’s mission. Wendy and Nadav also headed to her church and home, which both play an important role in her motivation to impact the community through small business.

We were lucky to work with Nadav, who has taken photos for National Geographic, Newsweek, and Time. “He wanted to capture the moments,” Wendy said. “It was cool to share his company.”

Wendy wanted to show Nadav several ways Carpe Diem impacts the community. “I loved to share what was going on in Durham. It was a real honor to share life here. It’s an important story to share,” she said.

A Carpe Diem fleet carWendy said cleaning is often viewed as a thankless job, even though its impact in the community can be far-reaching. “To be able to have the gift of ‘thank you’ was great. We’re doing a cool thing,” Wendy said. “The work we’re doing is very hard to quantify, and so having the opportunity to be affirmed in that which is not normally quantifiable, was awesome.”

Once the photos are released, the Carpe Diem office walls will soon be adorned with a visual reminder of the Small Business Revolution recognition. The photo series will also serve as a daily reminder of the bigger work happening in Durham besides cleaning houses. “We’re grateful for this experience to showcase our community impact,” Wendy said.

Stay tuned for our big photo reveal coming in early September. Many thanks to the Small Business Revolution team for making this happen!
